Yea, my kiddos are getting older too and I think I'll get em an apple watch before a cell phone. Dunno what the "general" rule of thumb is but my oldest is 10 now.

We got my oldest an Apple Watch around 10 to text us or FaceTime audio when they are at home without us. Don’t think I’m going phone until 15/16 when they will be driving or riding with others
