That thought never crossed my mind and is a great plot hole in so many Christmas movies that involve Santa. Maybe, dad just assumed mom always bought them, and mom assumed dad did and no one ever addressed it?
In my house if it happened, I would just assume my wife bought the presents. Of course, we'd figure it out because she would give me shite for getting the kids a gift and not telling her. She already thinks we buy too many gifts; even though she is the one that does all of the shopping.

yeah I've always had this thought on these movies and people not believing....
sure you could argue that maybe the parents don't remember certain things they bought but in Santa Clause he brings a fricking canoe in. "hey babe uhhh did you buy Dylan a canoe? Nope."
