This is false for a bunch of reasons.

If it fails, every year you kept him is a failed year.


You commit to never learning Trey's true value, and he'll always just be an ok role player. We'll never know if he can be a high level player, once the extension is signed Trey is screwed.


We also lose the ability to make a trade now to get the head start on the future.


Just too many reasons to not keep him. We know it won't work, so the realistic dollar amount is irrelevant.
