No one is admitting that the ball was hit in a tough spot for both pitcher and catcher. Ideally the pitcher charges forward and catcher stays home and pitcher tosses it home for the out but the catcher has to make an effort for the ball there, eliminating that play.

If the pitcher gets there first, that is a really tough play for a lefty to make. It is low percentage. Simultaneously it is tough for the catcher to run with full gear to a ball moving towards the pitcher, pivot, and make an accurate throw with a runner moving down the line.

You are correct. Herring had a bit of a meltdown to load the bases and put them in a position where a wacky play could lose them the game. He needs to be nails there and he was not.
