Usually its knocking the solenoid loose because it is weak and does not have quite enough umph to close completely....vibrating it with a hammer can make it turn loose. Sometimes it the starter being weak and not being able to start turning...again, vibrating it with a hammer will usually free it up enough to turn. SO will connecting another running car in series with jumper cables or even a wire coat hanger....doubling the voltage will usually do the same thing as womping it with a hammer. One word of caution if using a coat hanger...it will get cherry red in seconds. One can imagine how I know this...
