Knee replacement delayed 2 weeks because of a minor scab?

Friend 78 went in for a knee replacement this morning only to have the surgery delayed for 2 weeks. He had a minor scab caused by scarping his knee while gardening last week. What's the reason... infection risk?

If I had to guess I would say that the surgeon in this case may have had some specific instructions for the pre-surgical period and maybe your friend broke those rules in the opinion of either the surgeon or the other surgical staff involved. So, in short, yes, it's likely an infection risk. If the scab is right in the area where the incision would be made, you can understand why the surgeon would not want to operate on that area. Their liability is already high enough, so they wouldn't want to slice right through broken skin/scab, if your friend ended up getting a post surgical infection it would be blamed on the surgeon/surgical team/hospital, when ideally...all of that could be avoided by just letting the wound heal first and then operating. They are probably making the best decision for everyone involved.

Infection is the concern. It's an elective surgery that should be performed under optimal conditions. Infections after joint replacment are horrible complications. Waiting 2 weeks to give best chance of success is a small inconvenience compared to an infection that requires milultiple additional surgeries to cure.

Thanks for informative responses. I've had no personal experience with joint replacement but know five people who have had it done. Four turned out good-to-great, but one ended up with a fused knee due to post-surgical infection... possibly related to dental work.

Yes infection! Same thing happened to me. I had been fighting infection from previous knee surgery. They don’t take any chances.
