John Carter of Mars, Dune, Jack Kirby's New Gods, Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress, Flash Gordon... not so much "Lucas was coming up with his own stuff" but instead, "Lucas was quilting a story from previous successful works."

It’s still different than adapting a book to a movie.

There are definitely moments in Star Wars where you know Lucas wasn’t thinking trilogy.
