If he was in a parking garage, there's a good chance he was backing up against a wall.
I'm just making a wild guess, because I have done that before when I had my 4 wheeler in the back of my truck and need to go inside walmart. Back up against a light pole or whatever I could.

That actually makes some sense, I was thinking of an open parking lot. I once had a job that required travel to shady areas, overnight stays in less than nice motels, and a truck (camper top) full of tools. We would always back it up to a light pole at night when we were at the motel.
