Social Media led many in Hollywood to think certain demos were bigger than they are.
Take Star Wars, as prime example. The math was that, by catering to "marginalized groups" (Gays and other fetishists, Women, POC) they would increase their market share by more than they would lose of the core fanbase (white males). The hiring practices, ham fisted "inclusive representation", exhausting girl-boss Mary Sue "White Man bad" storylines in everything. . .they did indeed start to lose their core WM fanbase.
But the math didn't work. Gays and women by and large didn't give a hot shite about Star Wars. They gained SOME in those demos, but not enough to offset.
Gambling that you can lose the people who made your franchise what it is, and you can grow it in a demographic that has never shown interest. . .well, it is bold
ETA: re-reading my post, want to be clear. I don't think gays are inherently fetishists. . .just all the other letters other than L & G of the LGBTQMNOP
