Either be rebuilding or competing for a title. This in-between, 9-8 record borderline playoff team is shite.
Let's be clear. "Rebuilding" really means finding that star QB, right? You need one of those to compete for championships. And you're thinking getting pick #1 is the way to do that. History says different. Mahomes and Allen were both trade-ups by decent teams. And because those rosters hadn't bottomed out, they stepped into situations where they could win. Bryce, Trevor, Kyler, Baker, Goff, and Jameis all went to crappy teams at #1 and those teams are still crappy. Only Joe Burrow really rescued a shite team on his own. That's ALL the top QB picks the last decade. Look at the young successful QBs drafted in recent years - Lamar, Purdy, Dak, Hurts, Love. All stepped into quality rosters that were ready to go. The way to actually win when you get a great QB is to maintain a decent team for him. That means you're gonna win 7-10 games, unfortunately. If you know a realistic way to bottom out for just one season while also maintaining a quality roster for your top pick QB, please share.

Your words, not mine.
Maintain cap flexibility, don't be delusional about competing with Carr & Dennis Allen. Accumulate talent like the Alex Smith Chiefs did prior to Mahomes.
