Counterintuitively, it was the Ron Paul movement, which the NEOCONs successfully sidelined. Then it looked like we would get Ron light with Rand, then Trump sucked all the oxygen, and the rationality, out of the party. I’m honestly not sure what the path forward is now for the Republican Party.
Eta: And I agree that the current path for the Democratic Party appears terrifying.
