There are dozens and dozens of articles from the 80s and 90s complaining about teams like Bulls, Sonics, Knicks and Pistons stretching or manipulating the rules to play zone defenses back then. The only real change from the original illegal D to the 3 second rule is the leniency on digging and help position. In the old days you couldn’t be caught in between on a post dig or help on a perimeter player but now you're allowed to do it. but you cant go out there and sit in a 2-3 or 1-3-1 zone. the only actual zone alignment you'll see in the NBA is 1-2-2 which is really just a sagging man to man the way they play it.

Plenty of teams utilize matchup 2-3 zones. The Heat have been using it for years.
