Oh, that reminds me of something I read several years ago in either Jackie Sherrill’s book or an article written about him. Can’t remember which one it was. But, he said that Texas was trying to do the same thing to A&M that they did to SMU once Jackie arrived as coach and A&M eventually started beating Texas every year. He said that Texas had over 80 private detective types on the payroll that were being paid to spy on A&M coaches, players, other A&M athletic personnel, etc. And even their families. Some wild shite!

Yes, Texas destroyed the SWC because SMU cheated. The 1987 death penalty caused the SWC to collapse 7 years later.
Definitely wasn't because it was a conference comprised of 3 decent programs and 6 also-rans, all but 1 (who then left) from a single state. At the beginning of the TV era where only people from Texas or Arkansas would watch the games on TV.
It's always Texas.
