Highlander costs 20K more than the Outlander, yet the Highlander averages close to 6K maintenance during first ten years of service, whereas the Outlander costs $7200.
Seems like the Outlander is a better buy if wanting a long time vehicle.

Your logic is sound….but I am not sure if the Outlander is the same size as the Highlander.
I thought it was more like the Forester, CR-V, or Equinox…, which are a size smaller than the Highlander. With that in mind, the Outlander is priced appropriately - maybe a little too much considering the reduced resale value it would have relative to those competitors.
