I never said I wanted that. I said you can’t give people 0 options except jail for being homeless. We should fund shelters to give people the ability to get out of homelessness and then you can lock people up if they are sleeping on the street.

We do but they choose not to agree to be sober and be in the shelter at a certain time. They can’t just come and go as they please so they’d rather sleep on the street where they can beg for money to shoot up.

You’re seeing this through a very naive viewpoint.

They can take their chances outside of city limits. Being homeless is not illegal. There is at least one shelter and maybe another, and those homeless do not get arrested just for being homeless. Homeless don’t get arrested walking around during the day. The conduct of camping out and/or sleeping in public areas is what can get a citation for anyone.

Another article I read mentioned the original plaintiff said the city didn’t have a low barrier shelter, but it did have one shelter (and may have another since lawsuit first filed). The original shelter at time of suit was run by a church and had behavior requirements that homeless didn’t want to follow. I am not sure who runs anything new started since filing or what the county offers.

The homeless in Grant’s Pass have also filed another lawsuit against the city for encampment sweeps. Their ability to get legal representation is impressive, but what if those lawyers built a shelter or housing for their clients instead.
