Pete Rose is one of the biggest assholes in the history of professional sports
That is true. But it's not unreasonable to think MLB is trying their absolute best to avoid being forced to take a hard look into Ohtani's activities. When word of Rose's gambling came to light his playing career was over and MLB still was very popular around the nation. MLB didn't NEED Rose.
Now, MLB's domestic popularity is a far cry from what it was in the 70's and 80's. However, they have a huge Asian market, led predominantly by a player in Ohtani who is arguably the best players in the game...and also in his prime. MLB does not even want to consider the thought of having to ban what is perhaps it's marquee star. One that helps generate a ton of revenue both domestically and abroad.
The current story is that Ohtani's translator...who somehow had direct access to Ohtani's bank account..."stole" $16 MILLION dollars from Ohtani to make bets without Ohtani having any idea whatsoever he was doing so. That story doesn't pass the smell test. Even if Ohtani himsel wasn't placing the bets, he was at least aware of something. A thorough investigation would probably uncover some evidence of that. Except MLB doesn't want to find that evidence because it would be bad for business...all while they have taken a decades long hard stance against Rose. I could see why he may be a bit miffed. It feels like selective outrage by MLB.
