I've seen water snakes do a pretty good impression of a cottonmouth when swimming; most of the body up with the head tilted up. I think the are more prone to do that when they are relaxed and nobody is around. If anyone is around they go under.

I would think it would be the opposite, because they puff up with air to make themselves look big when they are threatened. But idk
