To be fair, the screenwriters basically wrote him as a damsel in distress, which he played pretty well (and that was NOT Frodo from the books).

Frodo is tough to cast. He's basically a pretty brave, intelligent and competent guy, in way over his head, but determined to see it through and has a fair understanding of what he has to do. That seems like a role a lot of leading men can take, but then you have to have him physically look almost childlike.
