Gymnastics experts (I am not one) say that OU's routines are way easier in difficulty level than LSU does. The Sooners have less chance of making mistakes and the subjective nature of scoring makes it worse and they are rewarded for doing simpler routines.

I have daughters in competative cheer and dance, and we deal with the same things.

You go to one competition and do a routine, and you get an 85 out of 100 and finish towards the bottom of the rankings, and the judge reports say the routine was too simple so it was hard for the judges to award points, even though it was done without mistakes.

Then you to to another competition, add some difficulty to the routine, but that diffictulty is not executed perfectly, and you get an 83, because of 3 points of deductions after a higher base score of 86 (due to added difficulty, which only added one base point)

Then you go to a thrid competition, using the same difficulty as the second, make the same mistakes, and you score a 92 because of 3 points of deductions, BUT those judges gave you a higher base score of 95 because of the difficulty, that the second one did not.

Then you add to the fact that different competition companies start to get different reputations for how their judges score, etc.
