I came here to say someone did a poor job of estate planning to let Uncle Sam take that much wealth from future generations.
Hypothetically, how much of that “wealth” could have been saved by trusts and other tax avoidance schemes?

All of it. There is zero reason to ever have to pay an estate tax. Could have been 0.
