you ever heard of the grand canyon?
Tell me you never seen Stairway to Heaven without telling you've never seen it.
StH is in a major tourist city and GC is in the middle of no where. It in no way compares to the Grand Canyon. Most rescues at the Grand Canyon are fairly easy and routine, a hiker on a wide and well maintained trail gets overheated or has another medical issue. Usually easy to get to the hiker and get him/her out.
Rescues from Stairway to Heaven are complicated and may require a helicopter and some very dangerous flying.
Open up StH to public hiking would be a disaster. Too many out of shape folks would try it and need rescue. The very young and very old, with enough water, can navigate the GC from top to bottom and back up, you need to be in good shape for StH and you still may not make it.
