If a man in the Old Testament era thought his wife had been unfaithful, he would take her to a priest, and the priest would administer an abortifacient (the 'bitter water"). If the woman aborted the pregnancy, she was deemed to be guilty of adultery, but if the pregnancy survived, the child was deemed to be that of the husband.quote:
