I don’t believe high speed rail will work in most of the US because of density issues, but this post betrays a fair amount of ignorance on the subject in a single point: that it’s normal for you that a major mode of transportation is 12 miles away from you. Pick any major European or NE US city with both an airport and a train station. Find both of their locations on Google maps. Once you do, one of the major advantages of rail travel will quickly become obvious.

Do you mean, pick a city that existed well before the advent of the automobile?
