To live on Mars, or the Moon, colonists will have to live underground to avoid hard radiation from the Sun and cosmic rays. The real treasure is in the asteroids. We need the valuable minerals in them.
To change the atmosphere on Mars will take multiple hits from comets that we can steer into the polar caps on it. The comets carry water ice that is needed to terraform Mars.
Interplanetary space travel for Mankind is necessary for us to survive and grow. Have you ridden the subways in New York City ?
