Even if we were to find another habitable planet, those who colonize it will eventually evolve into something different. And humans (homo sapiens) will no longer exist there.
Whatever scientists end up calling my great great great (1000X) grandchildren, I want those people to have a chance to exist, as opposed to not having one because people today didn’t see the point in trying to live off the planet so homo sapiens were killed off by a giant space rock or runaway volcanism.
Seriously, what has happened to people? Humans went to the moon simply because it was there, now we’re too lazy/nihilistic/dull to imagine anything else?

Their greatest fear is that someone might succeed and leave them behind. So they will do everything they can to prevent others from trying.
This isn’t just for colonizing other planets. This is for any attempt at trying something ambitious.
Ayn Rand wrote a book on these people.
