This only works if you have a relatively modern unit that will adjust to the demand with a multi-stage compressor and/or a variable speed fan in the air handler. The temperature differential for the higher demand call is typically 3 to 5 degrees. Probably very rare in units that are 25 years or older.

You already knew this but you also need to know your audience.

No. my wife has no idea how they work.
house came with the older Honeywell 8000 series (green screen) 7 day programmable. they stay on Auto/Auto. I've replaced one with a similar white-rodgers.
