It's always easier to be stern early and ease up later, rather than the other way around.

I learned this the hard way in my first management position, trying too hard to make people like me. People either look at you as a pushover, or they become so friendly it's hard to clamp down on them.

Also, take your time to learn everyone's role inside and out. You need to be jack of all trades master of none, but what you don't want is trying to manage positions where you don't have good knowledge of what and how they're supposed to do their job.
