Just one episode in and I am liking it. Beyond the B&W it has a very art-house feel to it. Someone with a short attention span probably won't make it through the first episode, well unless you like stairs. It had a lot of shoe leather in the first episode and a modern theatrical release editor would have left most of it on the floor. I actually like that because I am constantly looking for meaning and one of Chekhov's guns in every scene.

Totally true statement. I was re-engaged in the travel related suffering that often occurs in foreign countries in E1. The NYC sequence early bored the shite out of me.
Back to the stairs, why does someone that lives in NYC suffer so much with them from that era?
It helps a lot to quasi-know at least one romance language so you can sort of get what is going on when he hits Italy. Even with subtitles, you're just getting Italian with the locals.
