Biggest problem to mulch is lazy yard people
Over time they build up "mulch mounds" and after 15 to 25 years the roots get higher and higher and the tree is more likely to tip over in a high wind. I keep a slight depression below grade around the tree and backfill with large decorative rocks. Outside that inner ring is where the mulch gets placed when they do it and make sure mulch never exceeds grade.
