The jump from 1080 to 1440 in resolution is pretty big, looks wise. Along the same lines that Josh said, but current PC hardware can push good FPS in 1440. For me, this was the easiest jump. You can almost have the best of both worlds in FPS, looks, and cost in the 1440p sets.
1440p at 144Hz or 165Hz are very available and you can get a 27" for under $200, and sometimes a 32" for a bit over $200.
