There was an eclipse in the early 1980s, and I remember us all standing in the yard at Hynes Elementary watching it. That was (still is?) an Orleans Parish public school.
That was the only year I attended Hynes

Hynes in the 1980s was pretty unique. A lot of strong personalities were running that place: Mrs. Morvich, Mrs. Rivers, Mr. Dominic... Then you had that weird fascist-arse safety patrol with the orange sashes and badges.
I would like to see someone try and tell Judy Morvich that the kids had to stay inside for the eclipse. She would have laughed you out of her office and had you trespassed off of the school property as a menace to education. Of course, she would have had to call the cops to do that, because back then teachers knew how to manage kids without some clown armed with a handgun skulking around.
