Well, the reasons are obvious. First, children hurt a family’s financial situation; they used to help, back when most were farmers. Second, birth control and abortion are easily available. Third, and most important, is the loss of religion, which used to infuse people with the idea that their duty was to provide acolytes of the one true faith.

Our societies are turning more and more toward hedonism. It is true that we can all lead “better” lives if we don’t have children - that is, better if you believe that hedonism and conspicuous consumption are best.
