I think another possibility is less that they're trying to defend a stolen election and more that it's retribution for a frontal assault on America's elites, hence it being largely acquiesced to by GOP types too. I know some will conflate the too (the elites dictated the election and this was an attack on the elites), but I think even if you're less inclined to believe it was about upholding a fraudulent election, I think the point stands. They're trying to teach the little people a lesson about getting too noisy with them. The January 6 people scared them.
