hmmm,
First and foremost, if possible, while in safe mode back up as much of your personal data as you can. If you only have 2 minutes...i don't know what to tell you.
- Have you recently installed any new hardware to the machine?
+ If yes, check the Computer Management(right click My Computer) to see if there are any hardware conflicts going on.(you'll see yellow exclamation points) Not likely.
- Have you tried to do a system restore out of Safe Mode? (Program Files > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore) I can't remember from my techie days whether or not this is possible out of Safe Mode.
- Do you still have your Operating System CD's? More importantly your Diagnostics CD that came with the PC?
+ If yes, pop it in tap F12 and boot from the CD. Then run a full diagnostics test.....takes a while.
- When booting up, do you here a clicking or grinding noise coming from the hard drive?
+ If yes, pull the hard drive from your machine, pop it into a plastic bag and freeze it for 24 hours and try again. seriously....this works sometimes.
The bad new is.....more than likely you will either have to reformat your computer or you will have to get a new hard drive. Neither the end of the world if you have backed up your personal data.
Just let me know...
PS - God Bless You for what you do for our country. I'm more than glad to help you as much as I can.

Most of the time, if you can run fine in Safe Mode, then the issue is fixable. Definitely try a system restore. Could be a driver issue. A driver loads when booting normally that doesn't load in safe mode.
You could also try the "last known good configuration" from the boot menu.
Plain and simple... there is something running when Windows boots up that does not run when booting in Safe Mode. You need to figure out what that is. Could be a bad driver, could be spyware.

FUSC,
still need help. I'd respond to your thread on the OT, but I'm not liked so much over there. I can help you here though.
I'm in Professional IT and it's Christmas Vacation Time at my office and I have to be here when no one else is....I'm bored out of my mind, let me help.
