I have to imagine a lot of this is like the social media-based narcissism where "we want him to enjoy it for as long as possible" is really "we want to enjoy watching him enjoy it for as long as possible". Like I bet the mom is worried she won't get to do Elf on a Shelf this year and, more specifically, won't be able to post pics from doing it.

5th grade is really old to be believing in that stuff, especially today.
