Sure there is some leniency. At the very least you need to see the team playing like an NCAA tournament team at the end of the season with high level play from his recruits from the last couple of years to justify that his process is working.
That's kind of what I'm saying. As of now, he's going to have 6-7 new players. That means half of the roster, possibly more, will be new. That's likely going to be the case next year as well simply because of the nature of the sport today. So if after three tries to put together a competitive roster, one that is in NCAA Tournament contention, and LSU has similar to worse results than they did this year, what reason would you have to believe he could do in year 4 what he hasn't been able to do in 3 seasons?

I disagree that stagnation in year 3 means CMM can't ever turn it around. With the portal, one good offseason can turn a program around. That good offseason could just as easily happen in year 4 or year 5 as long as the wheels don't fall off like they did in year1.
Now don't get it twisted. We as fans should expect another step forward in year 3. And 17 win seasons are only good enough for so long before we should move on. I just definitely don't agree that if it doesn't happen in year 3 it means it never will.
