That should have been a warning sign to the mafia that their days were numbered. For years the FBI and the Justice Department considered the mafia a disorganized problem confined to a few neighborhoods in a few cities. Local cops had no idea about its structure, and only knew a few names of anyone involved.
When gangsters start talking to reporters and spilling secrets, then the code of silence is broken, and they will also talk to law enforcement and flip on everyone to save their own skin.
