The ship has to know at what draft, how much of the ship is above water. Most ships that come in the Mississippi River, pull about 32ft of draft. 32ft of the ship is under water.
The controlling maximum freshwater draft for the Mississippi River Ship Channel from the jetty end of Southwest Pass to the upriver limit of the Port of New Orleans is now set at 50 feet for the first time ever.
From the Southwest Pass, it’s 230 miles up the Mississippi River to Baton Rouge.
A ship loaded with Jet-A once lost power while leaving a dock. Lucky that the tugs jammed it against the dock, an a few lines were dropped, helping to slow it down.
Jet-A powers modern commercial airliners and is a mix of extremely refined kerosene.
