but i am convinced kids today are just built diffrent....

They start younger, they are more serious and they have better information available.

I have a 19yo on the cycling team I coach and he is primarily a track cyclist but is the sprinter on our team. He is a certifiable quadzilla capable of 2100 watt explosions. He does gym work separately but he works out with the team in the offseason. He is 5'10" 187 and he does squat reps with 495. I don't let him lift more when he is with me trying to prevent injury. We started doing Bulgarian split squats last year and I caught him doing 315 a couple of weeks ago. All I could do was shake my head and as he noted I hadn't put a limit on them.

The kid lives and breathes power output. Along with all the other advantages the really good kids at anything now have a focus basically unheard of 40 years ago.
