He entered pretrial diversion. It's an agreement between the defendant and the prosecutor. He might have to pay a fine, take an anger management course, do community service, or whatever. If he does whatever he agreed to do, the prosecutor dismisses the case.

It's like a mild probation, but the court isn't ordering you to do it. It's basically a settlement with the prosecutor. If pretrial diversion is completed and the case is dismissed, it's just a dismissal as far as the court is concerned.
