I’ve never heard of someone donating to their HS. How does this work? Do they call you?

My stepson graduated from Jesuit and stepdaughter from Mt. Carmel and both get letters from the Alumni Association asking for them to help with donations from time to time.
And it's not like they both recently graduated. The stepson is 39 and stepdaughter is 32 with both being out of high school since age 18.
