The only decent and responsible thing to do is to tell the landowner and let him decide.
Anything else is to potentially screw over the guy for allowing you guys to handle firearms on his property. Regardless of what any of us think it will all boil down to what a law officer would think.

Just read where your buddy is still on probation for a felony.
There is a special category of stupid for you and your buddy. Sorry for how that sounds, because it the absolute truth.
You do understand at the very minimum, ANY SCREW UP will send your friend AND YOU to jail if a law officer sees him using your firearm unless you tell them he stole it from you? This is regardless of what the law officer wants to do to your landowner friend
You might want to consider that fact.
