I make it very clear to both clients and my organization when I will be going on vacation and that when I am out it will be difficult to impossible to contact me but if it is an emergency they can leave a voicemail and I might call back. I'll clear up as many loose ends as possible before leaving and set auto-forwards on my email (which I don't check while out) for specific clients/terms to other people who can handle things while I'm gone. Every now and then a client get's told "sorry, we'll have to wait till he gets back to get those answers." The world has yet to fall apart in my absence.
