Depends on the nature of the job. Clients need answers now, and he may hold all the information. Sucks the company has not crosstrained someone to fill in, or he has withheld information to maintain his own value.

It can't be all three. Work to live, not live to work. I don't understand why older generations fetishize over the idea that if you don't answer while you're AWAY ON VACATION then you're a bad employee. Companies should have employees trained with redundancy measures so that if one person is out, their work is taken over by others.

Do these same feelings translate to someone who is sick/recovering from a procedure? They usually do not, so why do vacations get held to a lower standard?

Employees that live to work and not work to live

On vacation. Do not contact. Even if it is just a week off at home. Do not contact.
