My father was an aircraft safety director for the Army and an accident investigator. Where ever he was stationed, the accident rate dropped dramatically.

He saw a pattern at one of the maintenance hangers at Ft. Rucker. One night I went with him to the hanger and was told to make sure the mechanics there didn't leave. He went out to the flight line and surprised a couple of mechanics sleeping the helicopters. They were supposed to be doing maintenance checks. The next day they were fired.

The rash of problems we are seeing certainly look like a maintenance issue.

The rash of near collisions at airports too is unusually high. That could be due to understaffing and fatigue, a lower standard for controllers or both.

DEI isn't going to fix it.
