cant be 8. if i measure the green bar and red bar, the red bar is 1" and the green bar = 3 5/16", not 4"

It is.
The 6m shadow from the green bar to the wall accounts for half its height (4m). The remaining 4m is accounted for on the shadow, which is a total of 4m + 4m = 8m.
