While this is debatable, just assume there was a just and reasonable cause for U.S. military to be involved, the
biggest problem with Vietnam is that you had politicians making military decisions and our government had no plan to win. They sacrificed 58k American lives and never once had a plan to defeat the NVA.

That plus the historical reality of 3rd party intervention. I was in HS and college during VN. I did not participate in any protests. However, I made it clear to my classmates and profs that the war was unwinnable due to history. When a power intervenes in a foreign conflict they MUST have the cooperation and support of the civilians they are trying to 'save.' We did not have that from the S.V. people. They were sitting it out without taking sides. They did not inform our troops of N.V. locations, plots, etc.
Did I get arguments in my class discussions? Nope. Surprisingly my peers and profs agreed.
