The best was the fair when you were in Junior High in the late 70’s. They had several booths that were basically gambling. One was a big checker board and you would put your money on red or white. If you hit the black line in-between it was a loser. Or the bulldozers that pushed quarters out based on if you hit it right. The Zipper brings back some memories or the dunking booth guy who would taunt big guys into wanting to dunk him. “Hi and Dry”

I’ve said this same thing about the street grid system there in Lake Charles. It makes it easy to do though when you’re building in old cow pastures and fields.
Ignorant.
Most if thise curves in the old roads and highways in the older days were a failure of government to be able to secure land from owners (have to go around) or to do damn political favors for a friend and have the road pass near their property for some sort of gain.
And as they mature into more used paths the last 30 years, it wasn't corrected, or was too late.
Lake Charles got it right a long time ago because they were smart. End of story

Two nasty people I went to HS with were once arrested for banging in a port-a-potty at Contraband Days.
That rivals the legend of the infamous “Poo Poo Picasso” who would go into the port o potties and make wall art by smearing shite everywhere.

Which is more likely? That people in Lake Charles were just smarter than the rest of Louisiana or that the geography was favorable?

This makes sense in terms of timing per my memory.
It was already dead when the name controversy started up
na he is right.
they started doing a coupe things that killed it
1) the races stopped. it was getting more expensive to get the race boats to come because the lake is hard on the boats but this hurt big big time
2) they started making the area along the seawall vip only. this hurt boat traffic big time.
3) the cops went crazy with the ticketing. some of that needed to happen as it had gotten out of hand but as usual it swung way too far one way
most of the non trashy folks did the boat thing. once that became a pain in the arse and the races went away, the festival as it was...was over.
the other mistake they made was never evolving the festival. if they would have started trying to get people into the downtown bars, restaurants and had tons of live music etc in that...maybe could have made it
after it stopped being about the lake and boating festival...it became a haven for culture and white trash to go and ended as crime ridden shite hole during the two weeks. stopped attracting good music too because of this.
i havent been in 2 decades as it became not my scene quickly after HS.

2. I'm wondering if the extension of Nelson Road over Contraband Bayou could be a game changer for downtown. Right now, getting from southern Nelson Road to downtown is a pain, requiring a lot of zig-zagging through the grid to get there. Having Nelson be able to feed directly into the old part of Lake Charles down Sallier Street would make downtown a quicker and easier destination for the commuters you want spending time/money downtown. We'll see, I guess.
this is good and bad for me.
i live right there adn would be really nice to swing over to nelson etc but damn thats gonna be more traffic on sallier.

I agree with this, but I'll add the music acts stopped coming.
Once they lost music acts and started doing these shitty little side stages, instead of the big stage, it kinda killed itself, unlike Epstien.
