I am a college educated millennial.
This phrase has different levels of meaning. I will attempt to explain the esoteric meaning here...
In this life, our actions are judged not by our own perceptions of right and wrong (good and evil), but by God's laws. Say for example you help someone that is suffering by enabling their suffering further. In that case, you actually gain negative karma by aiding another's suffering. But your intentions were good. Regardless, you will answer for those actions in this life or the next according to physics and universal truth.
This will not make sense to the profane.
