I never realized that The Black Hole was Disney's attempt to counter Star Wars until I read this article. To me, The Black Hole felt more like Star Trek than Star Wars.
It was a lousy movie, but I wonder if it helped open Disney's minds to producing more sci-fi content, leading to Tron a few years later.

the Black Hole was a fav of mine growing up - at the end, when Maximilian opened his eyes, and they were humans inside - it haunted my dreams for a long time.
